This is according to Wibo van den Ende, SAFE Marketing & Sales Director for Export, who says SAFE is gaining a stronger foothold in his markets, due to the producers’ consistently high quality of fruit. A forward-thinking agreement signed with select distributors such as Haluco (based in Europe) last year has also helped to grow SAFE’s reputation for attention to detail in delivering top quality fruit.<\/p>\n

Wibo says that, in general, Valencia’s, lemons and soft citrus are most popular. “Overall the quality of South African citrus is very high and considered above citrus qualities from many other producing countries such as Brazil and Argentina.”<\/p>\n

Wibo points out that, apart from price, quality, minimum residue levels\u00a0(MRLs) certification and consistency of delivery, “all\u00a0play a major role in purchase decisions.”<\/p>\n

SAFE totals packed by March include 104 000 cartons of lemons with 93 000 cartons “on the water” in March. The Marble Hall harvest was the first packed in the area giving SAFE the edge over other exporters.<\/p>\n

According to Chantelle Thompson, SAFE Logistics Operations Manager, “Our first lemons arrival was timed for early April in Malaysia and slightly later for Hong Kong.”<\/p>\n

Of the shipped cartons there is a split of 43% Middle East, 51% Far East and 6% Russia.”<\/p>\n

SAFE’s decision to base Wibo in Europe to “land\u201d the fruit has been a good strategic move.\u00a0 “We are not just landing the grapes or citrus cartons but we add value by checking and\u00a0meeting quality standards, labeling and repacking to enable\u00a0distribution directly\u00a0into supermarket depots – a service much appreciated by SAFE’s clients – and the fresh fruit demands of supermarket customers.<\/p>\n

The world’s trend to more healthy eating habits has also helped sales.<\/p>\n

“Almost all European supermarkets and catering companies are selling greater quantities of smoothies, fresh juices, fruit salads, fruit baskets and so on,” says Wibo.<\/p>\n
